Are breast implants durable?

Durability is one of the primary concerns of breast implants, and they are designed so that a rupture is extremely rare.

In the unlikely event of an implant rupture, the cohesive gel implants used at Lienjang won’t leak out into the surrounding tissues. They typically remain asymptomatic or show minimal changes in breast shape. If necessary, the implant can be safely removed.

Cohesive Gel Implants

The most widely used type of implant, cohesive gel implants can maintain their shape even in the event of a rupture. They can also acheive a natural breast line, even with individuals with smaller chest frames, and provide a natural appearance even when the skin is thin.

Saline Implants

This kind of implant is filled with saline solution, which is naturally found within the body. It has the advantage of being size-customizable, but over time the solution can leak out causing the implant to shrink, and slightly feel less natural.

Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL)

in 2019, two cases of breast implant-associated cancer were reported in Korea. This cancer, known as lymphoma, differs from breast cancer and is a type of cancer that develops due to immune system abnormalities.

Although research is ongoing to determine the mechanisms that contribute to the development of this cancer, there is currently only speculations that the texture of the implant surface plays a role in cancer risk. The exact cause has not yet been identified. (According to current data, no cases of cancer have been reported in patients who used smooth implants only, and when categorized by implant type, the rougher the implant surface, the higher the cancer incidence rate.)

This type of cancer is thought to be linked to an abnormal immune system response and may develop due to reactions in the capsule that forms around the implant after surgery.

Among the implants we use, such as BellaGel SmoothFine, Motiva, and Sebbin Microtexture—classified as microtexture in our clinic—the surface texture is rougher than that of smooth implants, but much softer than the implants associated with reported cancer cases. In post-surgery examinations, we have observed thinner capsule formation around these microtexture implants compared to smooth implants. While this suggests that they may be safer, we cannot guarantee they are 100% free of cancer risk. (The usage period for these implants is less than 10 years, and although no cancer cases have been reported so far, it is difficult to definitively state that it will not occur in the future due to limited data.)

However, microtexture implants tend to show better results compared to smooth implants in terms of feel, prevention of capsular contracture, and minimizing implant movement. Therefore, we explain these factors to patients and guide them in choosing the most suitable implant for their needs.
